Caroline Grant Mary Clare and her sister Edith Grant Martita Hunt brace themselves for shelter in the cellar as the air raid warning blares over their quiet cottage. The routine threat soon morphs into a real danger when a man in uniform collapses just outside their doorstep, and they bring him inside, laying him carefully on the sofa. Fear deepens into shock when they realize the man is a German parachutist, and with the church bells tolling to signal a looming invasion, Caroline clenches the revolver she now holds, keeping it ready.

A few moments later, a visitor arrives—a British army officer Manning Whiley asking for a map to help locate his unit. In a cruel twist, this appears to be a German spy, exposed when he mispronounces “Jarvis Cross” as “Yarvis Cross.” Caroline keeps him at gunpoint while she guards the fragile situation, and Edith is sent to seek assistance from the ARP.

Back at the cottage, the spy engineers a brief ruse to escape by appealing for a cigarette. While Caroline fumbles for one, he knocks the gun from her hands and slips away. His escape is not long-lasting, however, because the Grants have immobilised their car and locked up their spare bicycle, leaving him with limited options and a narrow window of pursuit. The chase leads to the involvement of the Local Defence Volunteers Ivan Brandt, who arrive to restore order and, in the process, destroy a parachute weapons canister.

The film draws to a close with the Grants expressing quiet thanks to a member of the LDV over a cup of tea in their cottage. The moment reinforces a persistent wartime truth about civilian resilience and alertness. The final words delivered by the LDV volunteer crystallize the film’s message: > You kept your heads. The front line is in every home nowadays.
