Set in a sunlit valley in southeastern France, a family of ladybugs celebrates their first litter and prepares them for independence. The film is voiced by John DeCantis as Man and Suzy Wilson as Woman, guiding us through a rich, interconnected insect world where loyalties are tested and unlikely friendships form.
Cox, a young and curious bug, finds himself at the center of the action. The other members of his litter tease him, especially the mischievous Toofette and his gang, who bully Cox as he learns the ropes of life on the meadow floor. A devastating moment comes when Cox tries to fly back to his family during a skirmish and crashes into a crevice, losing a wing. Stranded and unable to reunite with his kin, he seeks shelter in a sugar cube tin left behind from a forgotten picnic.
When the picnic is raided by ants, a foraging squad from the black ants arrives and carries the tin away, Cox still inside. The ants, led by the capable Mandible, decide to let Cox join their ranks after he proves his mettle by defending them from a hungry green lizard. The partnership between Cox and Mandible marks the start of an uneasy but hopeful bond, as Cox discovers a sense of belonging among the black ants.
Their journey is soon complicated by a rival ant faction—the red ants led by the dictator Butor. The two ant armies collide over food, and Mandible’s crew attempts to extend a peace offering in the form of a sugar cube, but Butor and his patrol pursue them relentlessly. The chase stretches from the embankment to a river, where Cox and the others ride the tin as the red ants chase them in a soda can. In the rapids, Cox falls overboard and is saved from a hungry pike named Boboche by his ant allies. The group fights its way over a waterfall, and the tin finally washes ashore, while Boboche sinks into the riverbed’s mud, unable to escape. The black ants reclaim the spoils, while Butor’s troop dashes away to avoid a dangerous car on the road, leaving Butor to report back to his queen and recruit reinforcements.
On the expedition toward the black ant nest, Cox encounters another family of ladybugs and briefly wonders about joining them. He eventually falls in love with a female from that group, but his inability to fly pushes him to stay with the ants as his chosen family. When they reach the ant hill, Mandible invites Cox to join and the group presents their hard-won sugar cubes to the queen. Cox’s dream of flight lingers through the night; he envisions soaring with both his new family and his beloved, but the morning finds him still grounded.
The calm is shattered when Butor and his red army lay siege to the black nest, using slingshots and a barrage of improvised weapons. The defenders try to repel the attack with a mix of grit and resourcefulness, yet their defenses falter under the red onslaught. In a bold move, Cox and Mandible unleash a cache of fireworks to turn the tide, but with only one working match left, they are nearly out of options. Remembering the picnic’s matchbox, Cox seizes a final sliver of hope—he discovers he can fly again and sets off to retrieve the box.
The pursuit leads Cox to the picnic area, where a black spider has claimed the matchbox and retreated to its dollhouse-like dwelling in a sewage pipe Cox had previously discovered with his family. He follows the spider into a claustrophobic, peril-filled space where a frog named Jean-Paul lurks at the threshold. The duo fights back, and Jean-Paul is seemingly killed when the house topples onto him. Despite the danger, Cox forges an uneasy alliance with the spider, convincing it to part with the matches. With newfound equipment, Cox and his ally set out toward the nest, determined to aid Mandible’s colony.
Meanwhile, Cox also helps his lover—who has grown more independent and left her own family—after a dangerous chase results in Toofette’s gang being struck by a passing car. The rescue reinforces Cox’s resolve and deepens the bond between him and his partner.
Back at the besieged fortress, the half-destroyed black nest becomes the stage for a dramatic turn. Cox and Mandible light the remaining fireworks, creating a spectacular, blazing display that triggers a forest-wide wildfire. The blaze forces the red ants to retreat, but the victory is bittersweet as the nest is severely damaged. A fire-and-rescue plane sweeps in, extinguishing the fire and saving Cox, Mandible, and the black ants. The nest, however, is flattened, leaving the colony to begin anew in the aftermath.
In the days and years that follow, the surviving black ants begin rebuilding their home while Cox returns to the meadow to raise a new family with his partner. Years pass, and the couple returns to the rebuilt ant nest to share a quiet sunset, reflecting on courage, family, and resilience. As the film winds toward its mid-credits moment, the ant who had carefully stored the objects used to defeat the red ants finally finishes a sliding-number puzzle, a small, hopeful note that even tiny lives carry big quiet victories.
The story presents a warm, vivid world where courage, ingenuity, and friendship transcend size, inviting viewers to root for Cox as he threads together two families, finds love, and helps his community weather destruction and danger with humor, heart, and a spark of light.
