Five longtime friends, each living with the lingering effects of mercury poisoning, come together at a quiet farm for a high-school reunion, seeking connection, memory, and a moment of respite from their frail health. The mood is a careful balance of nostalgia and fear, as they share stories of the past and confront how the illness has shaped their lives.
On the night of the reunion, Michael plans something hopeful: a proposal to Meera, a moment that would mark a bright point amid their difficult days. He gathers his friends and makes the plan known to Meera, and the group sets off on a late-night drive, the countryside slipping by in the dark as the car hums along. When the moment arrives, Michael asks Meera to marry him, and she accepts, bringing a complicated mix of joy and tension to the moment.
As they head home with Meera now the fiancée, trouble arises. Meera is temporarily blinded by an unsettling disruption to the car’s headlights caused by the friends’ restless interference. The night’s tension spikes when the vehicle swerves to avoid a dog crossed by a leash, and in that sudden sway, they accidentally drag a blind man from the road. They dump his body, hoping to cover their tracks, but the deed does not stay buried.
From that point, the group is haunted by the unseen presence of the man they killed. A ghostly menace emerges, terrorizing the four men in the car and pressing close to Meera as well. The spectral threat escalates from ominous whispers to direct danger, and soon the living fear of the dead becomes undeniable.
The truth behind the haunting unravels in a painful confession: Meera, who is Deaf, did not realize the car had struck someone. The ghost realizes that he killed innocent people, mistakenly assuming they were the owners of a factory connected to the mercury poisoning. He shares his own backstory of loss and poisoning—how mercury’s insidious reach left him blind one night as he walked his dog, the leash snagging on the car and dragging him toward a fatal headstone.
Amid the horror, a moment of mercy appears. The ghost forgives Meera and spares her life, choosing to possess her briefly so he can see his wife one last time. When the possession ends, he passes on his own hearing to Meera, granting her the ability she had never had before. In a climactic turn, the ghost then reveals his final act of justice by burning down the factory he once blamed, a symbolic tearing down of the source of so much pain.
In the end, the survivors are left to reckon with guilt, forgiveness, and the strange echo of a life lost to mercury’s reach. The story lingers on the consequences of a night that started with a hopeful proposal and ended in a confrontation with mortality, memory, and mercy.
