Across the border, Afreen—a shy girl from Lahore with a traditional Muslim upbringing—arrives in Hyderabad through a student-exchange program to study engineering at JNTU. Her father initially resists her career path, but eventually agrees to the idea of marriage arranged by his own terms. A match with Nadir, a wealthy and arrogant suitor who treats women with disdain, seems to be the family’s route to honor, and Afreen prepares for a life in Pakistan that she does not fully choose.

Both young people carry a shared, recurring dream—an eerie vision of death that ends with a haunting refrain from the song Lag Ja Gale, a cue that binds them in memory and emotion even before they meet. The narrative threads tighten when Afreen completes her first day of college and Roshan has just graduated himself. Afreen endures the rough edge of college life, including ragging that forces her to learn Telugu so she can blend in with peers. Amid the confusion, Roshan befriends a Pakistani student named Shabbir, while Afreen and Roshan gradually grow closer—though a dangerous undercurrent is always present.

A nightmare unfolds when a women-trafficking gang targets Afreen after a party. Roshan intervenes and rescues her, but the two do not manage to connect properly in that moment. Meanwhile, Nadir’s pressure grows, harassing Afreen by constant calls. Afreen pleads with her mother for permission to resist the forced marriage, but the family’s social standing compels them to protect their honor. To safeguard herself and her family, Afreen agrees to return to Lahore and pretend that her father’s health is at stake, hoping to defuse the danger—yet the plot keeps tightening around their destinies.

In a high-stakes turn, Afreen and Roshan finally cross paths again on a train bound for Delhi, where Roshan is headed for an Army interview and a trek in the Himalayas. A strange, almost fated bond blooms as they realize who each other is and why the other’s presence feels so electric. Afreen thanks Roshan for saving her, and she boards the Samjhauta Express, setting off toward Lahore with the weight of family expectations pressing down on her. In Lahore, Afreen’s father intensifies the arranged marriage with Nadir, and the wedding preparations move forward with relentless momentum.

The narrative then shifts into a layered mystery. After Roshan earns a successful Army interview, a trek glimpse reveals a dead body that resembles Afreen, a diary, and a photograph bearing Roshan’s name and the name Kabir. Roshan reads the diary and is drawn into a tale etched by Madira, a Hindu village girl, which unfolds into a sweeping, centuries-spanning romance in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. The war paints a brutal backdrop in the village of Kandiwara, Jammu and Kashmir, where Pakistan’s army occupies civilians as hostages. A rogue Havaldar tries to assault Madira, but Kabir, a Muslim Pakistani soldier, intervenes and protects her at great personal risk. For disobeying orders, Kabir faces a flogging, yet his loyalty to Madira deepens into a dangerous and consuming love. The Havaldar’s jealous vindictiveness grows, threatening Kabir’s life, while Indian forces regroup and push back across the battlefield. Kabir’s defiance culminates in a lethal clash with the Havaldar, and his comrades work to obscure the truth behind his death as if it were a mere casualty of war.

When the war ends, Kabir confesses to Madira that their time together may have been limited, yet the bond endures. Madira resolves to stay with him, and Kabir, moved by a desire to be with her across borders, attempts to cross the Indian border to elope. Indian troops intervene, and Kabir dies in the skirmish while Madira perishes in a cave during a landslide. Roshan absorbs the diary’s revelation: their love is a rebirth—their souls destined to find one another again in a new chapter.

The story breaks into public controversy as a media-worthy sensation, while Afreen becomes increasingly restricted by Hidayatullah, who clamps down on her autonomy by confiscating her phone and house-arresting her. Roshan, meanwhile, climbs the ranks, becoming a captain with the broad support of friends, family, and much of the Indian Army—except for his father, who remains fearful for his son’s safety. Afreen reaches out from Lahore, and Roshan makes a daring move to reach her on the Samjhauta Express. Nadir and his thugs probe the train, but Shabbir assembles a rescue operation to shield Roshan from capture.

A critical plan unfolds when a witness helps Roshan uncover Nadir’s abuses and a false police complaint lands Nadir in custody. Roshan escapes custody and confronts Hidayatullah’s household, laying bare the entire saga in a dramatic Facebook live broadcast that captures the nation’s attention. Undeterred, Roshan proposes an audacious elopement and, with Shabbir’s sacrifice and the couple’s dogged determination, the lovers push toward the shared dream of crossing the border once more. Afreen joins him after a chaotic chase, but tragedy marks the path—Shabbir is killed by Nadir’s men, and the border crisis escalates with the involvement of both Pakistan and Indian troops. The film closes on a tense yet hopeful note: Roshan and Afreen succeed in crossing the border, bearing the marks of the struggle and injury to Nadir, and they stand ready for Roshan’s training as a captain, united and undeterred for the challenges ahead.
