The movie opens with Mea Harper, a lawyer who is in couples therapy with her husband, Kal Hawthorne. During their session, Mea accuses Kal of infidelity, although he denies any wrongdoing. It is revealed that Kal’s mother, Azalia, has an overbearing presence in their marriage. She hasn’t disclosed to her family that Kal recently lost his job, and Mea has been supporting him financially.

The story continues at a restaurant celebrating Azalia’s birthday, where Mea is joined by Kal’s brother, Ray, a district attorney, and his wife, Charlise. Mea also runs into her boss, Maddy, who mentions a local artist, Zyair Malloy, played by Trevante Rhodes), is interested in hiring her. She then joins her family, where Azalia introduces a friend of Kal’s named Jenna, Arianna Barron, expressing her wish that Jenna was her daughter-in-law. Outside, paparazzi gather as Zyair is spotted inside, causing an uproar because he is involved in a high-profile case regarding the disappearance of his girlfriend Hydie.

Mea soon encounters Zyair at her workplace, where he requests her legal help. The media paints Zyair as a suspect in Hydie’s possible murder, with blood samples, skull fragments, and a video from Hydie herself warning Zyair that he might kill her. Zyair insists he is innocent and seeks Mea’s representation, which she initially refuses to give but then cautiously considers.

While working out with Charlise, Mea sees protests outside an art gallery where Zyair’s paintings are displayed, as art world figures rally against the censorship of his work, which has taken a dark turn after accusations against him. Despite her personal doubts, Mea visits Zyair at his studio, where he seductively guides her to paint with him. Their connection deepens during these sessions, and Zyair invites Mea to an underground sex club, which makes her uncomfortable but also reveals her attraction.

Jimmy, a private investigator and Mea’s friend, uncovers troubling information — Zyair’s ex, Hydie, may have been erased from local records in Mexico, adding suspicion. Mea’s curiosity and attraction lead her to visit Zyair again, where he manipulates her into painting, reinforcing her indecision about his guilt. After they share an intimate moment, Mea finds herself entangled in a passionate affair with Zyair.

Meanwhile, Mea’s marriage with Kal is falling apart. She notices Kal and Jenna entering a hotel room together, which fuels her guilt and confusion. Her visits to Zyair become more private, and she begins to realize the extent of Zyair’s manipulations as she finds a disturbing painting of herself, along with others he has created. A message on one painting, “DIE BITCH YOU RUINED MY LIFE,” confirms her fears, and Zyair admits to losing control in a rage over Hydie’s accusations.

The truth begins to unravel at Mea’s home when Kal, Ray, Azalia, and Charlise confront her about her whereabouts. Kal finally confesses that he’s unemployed and in rehab, and Mea admits to her affair. This leads to a heated confrontation, with Kal throwing her out. Zyair is detained, and Mea escapes to a resort in the Dominican Republic, where she unexpectedly encounters Hydie, alive and working as a maid. Hydie tries to avoid Mea, but her presence suggests that Zyair’s innocence might be more complicated than the case portrays.

Back home, Mea learns from Jimmy that Kal and Jenna were seen entering a hotel, confirming her suspicions. The situation intensifies as Mea discovers that Azalia is not sick but has been involved in a conspiracy. Azalia, with Ray, alongside Charlise, and Kal’s family, work together to frame Zyair due to their own hidden motives, including an affair and family secrets.

In a dramatic turn, Azalia stabs Charlise during a confrontation. Mea, desperate to escape, hijacks a car with Azalia on the hood and crashes into a tree, killing Azalia in the process. She then runs onto the road, joining Kal, who is driving, only to learn he was instructed by Ray to hit her. She deliberately causes a car crash, resulting in Kal’s death. The authorities arrest Ray, and Zyair is released, cleared of all charges.

In the aftermath, Zyair publicly thanks Mea for her role in his exoneration, even reaching out to see her again. However, Mea, having endured betrayal and loss, decides to walk away from it all, discarding her phone and choosing her own freedom over any new relationship. The film ends on a note of resolution and self-empowerment, with Mea reclaiming her life after a tumultuous journey filled with deception, betrayal, and redemption.
