Mazha tells the love story of Bhadra, Samyuktha Varma, and her music teacher, Sastrigal Biju Menon. The film opens with a teenage Bhadra arriving to study classical music in Sivapuram, a serene Tamil Brahmin village where the revered shastrigal presides. Her admiration for Sastrigal’s singing grows into a gentle infatuation as she soaks in the rhythms and poetry that fill the air. Bhadra’s creative spark begins to blossom under his tutelage, and the village’s atmosphere—centered near the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Tamil Nadu—colors her dreams and emotions.

As the years pass, Bhadra’s feelings linger as a youthful fascination rather than a romance in Sastrigal’s eyes, who continues to see her as a gifted student. When her parents learn of the infatuation, they move her away, and Sastrigal is obliged to marry his fiancée Sindhu Shyam.

Now a doctor in the making, like her father, Bhadra marries Chandran [Lal], a computer engineer. Chandran discovers her diary one day, and with no names in the entries, suspicion creeps in about every man in her life, including the elderly doctor Thilakan [Thilakan]. His mistrust worsens into drinking, and he dies from a related illness.

In the long aftermath, Bhadra undertakes a journey to Madurai to locate Sastrigal and uncover the truth of their intertwined fates. She learns that Sastrigal, too, has suffered losses: his wife is a mental patient, and, more heartbreakingly, cancer has taken away his once-melodic voice. The revelation reframes the love story into a meditation on missed chances, fate, and the costs of longing. In the end, Bhadra confronts the fragility of art, memory, and desire, and the two lives trace a quiet parallel of resilience amid disappointment.
