Marriage Is a Private Affair 1944

Set against wartime New York, Theodora “Theo” Scoffield West, Lana Turner, is the social center at the officers’ club, where many officers court her for a secure future. Her mother has endured a string of marriages, shaping Theo’s view of stability. When she accepts a proposal from Lt. Thomas “Tom” Cochrane West, John Hodiak, who is about to ship out, she hopes for a path that won’t require surrendering excitement. After the honeymoon, Tom’s father dies, a defense contractor running a lens operation for bomber sights, and the War Industries Board furloughs Tom from active duty and assigns him to take over the lens production.

Theo has a baby, Patricia Morrow who appears as Baby (uncredited), and she fears becoming merely matronly, preferring not to slip into the party-girl stereotype. She wrestles with the idea of returning to the life of the O club, where flirtations and social obligations tug at her. The situation is complicated by Joe Murdock, Hugh Marlowe, one of Tom’s business partners, an alcoholic who often disappears, leaving Tom to shoulder more of the defense contracts and keep the lens project moving forward.

Theo’s attention then shifts toward a familiar, dashing elder flame, Major Miles Lancing, James Craig, a figure who embodies both charm and risk. His presence unsettles her, even as it reminds her of the freedom she once imagined. To decide what she truly wants for herself and her child, Theo must grow beyond the patterns she has inherited and learn to recognize the faults around her without letting them dictate her choices. She must resist following the negative examples circling her life, choosing instead a path that balances responsibility with the spark of personal ambition.
