Frank Norris, his wife Mrs. Norris, and their daughter Vena Norris arrive at a dilapidated carnival, where they are hired as employees. A disturbing sight unfolds as several pallid, grey-skinned workers drag the fallen man’s body into an underground chamber beneath the park and begin to feast on it, revealing a danger far beyond ordinary carnival life.

Meanwhile, Vena Norris sneaks out after dark to explore the grounds and meet with Kit, a young, good-looking operator of the tunnel of love ride who has captured her interest. On her way, she is approached by Sonja, a cross-dressing male fortune teller who offers a reading, though Vena politely declines. Kit confides a chilling secret: an entire family disappeared from the carnival, and he suspects the proprietors may be part of an underground cannibalistic cult. During their conversation, Sticker ambushes them, forcing the pair to split up and flee in different directions. In the shadows, Bobo, a short, enigmatic dwarf, warns Vena of looming danger and hints at the darker currents flowing beneath the surface of the carnival.

Vena presses deeper into the labyrinth of rides and rooms, wandering through prop studios, bizarre attractions, and a movie theater where the pallid crew—led by their silk-clad figure, Malatesta—watch a silent film in eerie quiet. On the ferris wheel, Vena discovers Kit’s corpse slumped in one of the cars, a blow that shatters her composure and pushes her toward a breaking point. Back at the RV, Frank realizes Vena has slipped away and rushes to search for her, but the family is soon cornered by the cultists who prowl the carnival’s corridors, their presence filling the night with a growing sense of dread. Vena tries to reach the police from a phone booth, yet Sticker closes in and drives her into a claustrophobic funhouse. The couple escapes the RV, but they are relentlessly pursued through the park as dawn light begins to creep over the carnival’s ruined lights.

The next morning, Johnny—having been kept distant from his parents and unaware of their search—spots the family’s RV on the grounds. Mr. Blood gives him a cryptic, vague explanation that his family is “at rest,” a line spoken with unsettling calm. Alarmed, Johnny heads out to find Vena, while Blood’s hands—coiled with a strange loyalty to the family’s dark legacy—seem to pull him toward a grim fate. Blood’s true intentions blur the line between ally and threat as he leads Vena toward the caverns beneath the carnival, where Malatesta’s cannibal followers guard their secret and where Blood claims his own kinship to them. Instead of helping Vena, Blood lures her into a chamber where he begins to drain her blood, a gruesome act that is interrupted by Malatesta, who reveals himself in a startling moment of confrontation. Blood dies when Malatesta exposes his face, a brutal turn of events that shifts the balance of power beneath the carnival.

Johnny arrives just in time to find and rescue Vena, while Frank and his wife, still wandering through the cavernous underworld, stumble upon the cult’s theater. The brutal carnage continues as Mrs. Norris is killed by Bobo and then eaten, and the others pursue Frank through mirrored corridors until he is finally impaled through the eye in a fatal, grim trap. Sonja reappears, promising to guide Vena to her parents, but instead leads her to a freezer where their bodies hang in silent, unsettling rows, and then seals her inside. The end of the tale sees a weary, unanswered inquiry from a police officer who visits the carnival to question Malatesta about the disappearances. The officer’s obliviousness leaves the truth buried, while Bobo clinks a dunk tank’s mechanism and tricks the officer into dropping Johnny into the water, a cruel accidental fate that underscores the merciless nature of the carnival’s dark world.
