In North Cornwall, 1880, Mally Trenglos is a tough sixteen-year-old who earns a living by collecting seaweed and selling it as fertilizer to the local farmers. She lives with her grandfather, Malachi, in a small hut perched above the cove where the seaweed is gathered. Her parents died two years earlier in a drowning tragedy: when Mally’s mother found her father’s body, she insisted on burying him and lingered with the corpse through a dangerous storm. Mally ventured into the village to seek help, but no one came. The Gunliffe family answered the call, yet they did not believe her story, leaving her to confront the harsh sea on her own. By the time she returned to the water, her mother had drowned as well, and the memory of that night weighs heavily on the girl and her caretaker.
The film centers on the life of Mally, her grandfather, and Barty Gunliffe, a local boy and son of the Gunliffe clan who has been taking seaweed from their shared cove. The two are kept as wary rivals, bound by a history of suspicion and misunderstanding, as Barty repeatedly crosses into Mally’s territory to pilfer the weed that sustains their livelihoods. The tension between them sharpens the atmosphere of the coastal village, where old beliefs and new impulses constantly collide. Barty’s bravado is tested by the elements, and he repeatedly insists he is not afraid of the stormy ocean, even as the sea’s power threatens to overturn everything.
One fateful day, Barty ventures too far into the roiling surf and strikes his head on a rock, leaving him unconscious and drifting toward danger. Mally, drawing on a hard-won courage, manages to haul him from the treacherous waters and save his life. The act of rescue complicates their brittle dynamic: a line has been crossed, and the delicate balance of their rivalry begins to shift toward reluctant cooperation. Meanwhile, Mrs. Gunliffe—a figure who despises Mally—begins to suspect that the near-fatal accident was not accidental and that the young girl might have had more to do with the incident than she lets on. This suspicion casts a shadow over any budding reconciliation and tests the trust that is starting to form between the two families.
As the story unfolds, the storm’s memory gradually softens into a tentative understanding. The unlikely partnership between Mally and Barty endures beyond the sea’s rage, and they gradually learn to respect each other’s resilience. The film concludes with a quiet, hopeful image: Barty aiding Mally in the continued collection of seaweed, signaling the possibility of a new chapter for both their lives and a easing of the long-standing tensions between their families. The coastal landscape remains a constant presence—always vivid, sometimes brutal, yet ultimately a place where hard-won trust can flourish.
