In North Cornwall, 1880, Mally Trenglos is a tough sixteen-year-old who earns a living by collecting seaweed and selling it as fertilizer to the local farmers. She lives with her grandfather, Malachi, in a small hut perched above the cove where the seaweed is gathered. Her parents died two years earlier in a drowning tragedy: when Mally’s mother found her father’s body, she insisted on burying him and lingered with the corpse through a dangerous storm. Mally ventured into the village to seek help, but no one came. The Gunliffe family answered the call, yet they did not believe her story, leaving her to confront the harsh sea on her own.
