Dr. Warrier Suresh Gopi is the chief doctor at a city mental asylum, where a newborn girl arrives after her mother, who gave birth on the streets, remains unresponsive. The infant is named Manasi and is lovingly cared for by the devoted staff within the asylum’s walls. Manasi’s arrival becomes a rain to those dry lives, softening edges and softening hearts. The following day, a newspaper report shocks the hospital: Bindu has taken her own life.

When a notice from the Human Rights Commission arrives, the authorities are urged to release Manasi from care. The chief doctor wishes to adopt her, yet that hope is denied, and eventually Manasi is taken away by the state’s social welfare department. The story closes on a note of quiet, unresolved longing, as the people who cared for her face a future where her care will be wrestled with by institutions, rather than by the intimate, healing bond they shared.
