What Is Magdalene in Paris About?
The premise of Magdalene in Paris without spoilers.
Exploring identity and spirituality, this film follows Robertinho Chaves, a queer, androgynous Brazilian dancer from Santo Amaro da Purificação, who created a unique ritual in Paris. For over two decades, his creation, the Lavagem da Madeleine, has drawn crowds of over 60,000 people to dance to the rhythm of atabaques while washing the steps of a French church. The film intertwines the history of this vibrant tradition with the personal journey of its creator, a former dancer at the Paradis Latin cabaret, as he navigates the Afro-Brazilian diaspora and explores the boundaries between sacred and profane.
