Jake Lever Adam Kaufman is a successful cardiologist living in the upscale Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. One afternoon, he dozes off at the hospital where he works and dreams that his brother, a devoted ultra-Orthodox rabbi, tells him they are okay. Soon after, a phone call from his mother shatters that dream: Benjamin has died suddenly, leaving Jake stunned and deeply unsettled.
At Ben’s funeral in Brooklyn, Jake learns that because his brother’s wife Leah Lauren Ambrose was left without children, they must perform a halizah ritual to release them from the religious obligation of a levirate marriage. The weight of tradition presses on Jake, but so does his growing sense of responsibility and love. The two siblings navigate a tangle of grief, duty, and memory, trying to understand what Ben would have wanted for Leah and for themselves.
Leah wears a necklace—the identical hamsa Ben gave Jake before he left for college—which becomes a powerful, tangible sign of the past and of the bond they shared. The amulet awakens in Jake a longing he hadn’t fully acknowledged, reminding him of how much he loved his brother. He pulls Leah aside and candidly questions whether denying Ben’s existence is truly what the halizah vow requires of him. This moment marks a turning point, inviting them to reconsider the path laid out by tradition.
Rather than bend to a ritual he fears would erase Ben, Jake proposes a bold alternative: he will marry Leah and move with her to Washington, but they will maintain a platonic arrangement. Leah, seeking independence and a chance to forge her own future, agrees to a new arrangement that would let her leave her mother’s home, pursue education, and build a life on her own terms. The plan shifts the focus from ritual obligation to mutual support, as they both begin to redefine their futures in a city that holds new possibilities.
Meanwhile, Jake’s professional world keeps him busy at the hospital, and his girlfriend Carol [Christy Pusz] has little patience for the unconventional terms of this new partnership. Leah, for her part, starts to explore a more liberal stance within her faith while adapting to life in a bustling, unfamiliar city. As they navigate these changes, Jake finds himself drawn back to his Jewish roots, rekindling a sense of heritage and belonging that had been buried beneath the demands of his career.
In time, their relationship deepens into something more authentic and resilient than a conventional romance. They discover that the greatest gift Benjamin left behind was the possibility of a shared future built on trust, respect, and a deep bond between two people who choose love and commitment on their own terms. And in that thoughtful union, they come to see that, through the love they offer each other, they can honor Ben’s memory in a meaningful, lasting way.
