Phoebe is a bright university student who struggles to relate to her peers. Her only close friend is her roommate Robin, a person she tends to smother with advice. Robin ultimately leaves on a plane with a stranger she has just met, telling Phoebe that she is too uptight and immature and casually mentioning that she’s never had a boyfriend.

Feeling embarrassed by her own immaturity, Phoebe tries to go on a date, but the outing goes sour. She then finds herself talking with Frazer, her 14-year-old neighbor who mows her lawn. Over time, Phoebe grows close to Frazer, who enjoys listening to her advice and looks up to and respects her, while also teaching her to have fun and relax. Their evolving friendship begins to strain when Robin returns and notices how much time Phoebe spends with Frazer, a shift that makes Robin feel like Phoebe has crossed the line toward dating.

Meanwhile, Suzanna, Frazer’s neighbor, grows jealous of the attention Frazer gives Phoebe and warns him that Phoebe will want to have sex with him, a scare she hopes will push him away. Instead, Frazer buys condoms and later attempts to kiss Phoebe. Disturbed, Phoebe brushes him off and sets a clearer boundary.

On the way to graduation, Frazer approaches Phoebe to talk, and they share a kiss in front of Robin and her friends. The moment underscores a difficult truth: the age difference between them is too large for anything romantic to develop. Ultimately, Phoebe and Frazer decide to attend Phoebe’s graduation ceremony as friends, marking a nuanced end to a friendship that challenged Phoebe to reassess her own assumptions about relationships, adulthood, and being true to herself.
