Shy, gentle Dennis, obsessed with train‑spotting, is released early for good behavior after a rape sentence. His parents, barbers André and Rita, try to protect him, but the victim’s sister Barbara sparks a hate campaign. When another girl accuses him, Dennis is jailed again and beaten. Barbara’s boyfriend, lawyer Thomas Verelst, takes the case pro deo, arguing he should be placed in a mental institution.

Dennis is 26 years old but has the mind of a child. He is obsessed with trains and train schedules. His mother Rita is overjoyed when he returns from prison after serving a sentence for the alleged rape of an underage girl. The neighborhood, however, is not happy with Dennis’s homecoming, especially Barbara.
After Dennis masturbates at the playground — with his pants on — Rita and his father André decide to keep him inside. However, when Rita is at work, André watches Dennis but falls asleep. In this timeframe, Dennis goes outside to see the trains but does not return. Later on the evening, the police tell them that Dennis raped a woman. Dennis is found in a train station.
