Love at First Bite 1950

In a breezy, vaudeville-inspired caper, the Stooges—Moe, Larry, and Shemp—are caught up in plans for a triple wedding with fiancées they met during their military service in Europe. The three brides come from Italy, Austria, and France, and the ship carrying them to America is due to dock any moment, promising a rushed, joyous future for the trio. To unwind, the friends trade tales about how they met each fiancée, swapping memories that range from comic mishaps to heartfelt moments, all in the spirit of camaraderie that defines their rough-and-tumble bond.

To seal the memories in celebration, they raise a toast with Old Panther whisky, a potent liquor that hits fast and hard, sending them into fits of loud laughter and wobbly balance. In the midst of the revelry, Shemp, provoked by a sharp jab from Moe, accepts a duel challenge and selects seltzer bottles as the makeshift weapons, turning a nuisance insult into a slapstick showdown. Moe’s unexpected strike leaves Shemp drenched and sprawling on the floor, while the room spins with their intoxicated bravado.

Convinced that their companion is gone, Moe and Larry hastily decide to hide Shemp’s “remains” by sealing his feet in a tub filled with cement, planning to dump him into the ocean to avoid disgrace. They convenience themselves with a short nap as the cement sets, the haze of the night mixing with their sleep. When they awaken, a heavy hangover sits in, and they discover they can’t recall how Shemp ended up in the tub, leaving them to grapple with confusion and a creeping fear of their imagined catastrophe.

Seeking to reunite with their brides, the pair resorts to a dangerous, if comically bungled, emergency plan: they load the tub with dynamite, and a massive explosion flings them onto the docks where the waiting fiancées stand. The blast launches chaos into the harbor, scattering splashes and shouts as the couples scramble to regain footing. Meanwhile, Shemp remains trapped in the cement, and as the French bride approaches to cradle him, she ends up pulling him into the water, causing a dramatic splash that drenches the other couples and sends a final wave of comic misfortune across the scene.
