Love and Other Catastrophes 2016

Two University of Melbourne film studies roommates, Mia and Alice, begin a new chapter in a chic, sunlit apartment as they juggle studies, romance, and the search for a suitable housemate. The pair have just moved in, eager to share a space that feels modern and alive, yet they face the practical scramble of finding someone who fits their lives as perfectly as the place fits their tastes.

Mia, driven by a fierce dedication to her studies and a touch of romantic restlessness, becomes entangled in a battle with the university administration. Her quest to pull her favorite lecturer into his new department sets off a cascade of paperwork, deadlines, and procedural roadblocks that stand in the way of a smooth transfer. Complicating matters, her relationship with her girlfriend Danni begins to strain under the weight of distance and competing priorities. When Mia eventually ends things, Danni responds in kind, pursuing another love interest in part to provoke a reaction or perhaps to test Mia’s resolve.

Meanwhile, Alice, a meticulous perfectionist, faces a different kind of deadline: her four-year-delay thesis on “Doris Day as Feminist Warrior.” She longingly searches for the ideal partner, a person who can meet her exacting criteria, but the field of candidates seems frustratingly thin. In a twist of fate, she falls for Ari, a classics student who also works as a part-time gigolo—an alluring but deeply unsuitable match for someone with her exacting standards. At the same time, Alice attracts the notice of Michael, a shy medical student who quietly admires her from the edges of the social scene.

As the day unfolds into a party, the plans, tensions, and affections of Mia and Alice begin to unravel in unpredictable ways. The story threads together themes of desire, ambition, and the messy reality of love, suggesting that even the most carefully laid plans can be upended when hearts collide and lives intersect.
