On the eve of a monumental assignment in Birmingham, Ivan Locke must supervise the largest non-nuclear facility and non-military concrete pour in European history. The evening twists when he learns that Bethan, a colleague from a Croydon job with whom he had an affair seven months earlier—an affair that left her pregnant—has gone into premature labour. Despite his professional duties and the fact that his wife and sons are waiting at home to catch a football match, he makes a decisive choice: he will drive to London to be with Bethan during the birth.
