In Vienna during the late Imperial era, Lieutenant Fritz Lobheimer is having an affair with Baroness Eggersdorf. When he meets Christine Weyring, the humble daughter of an opera musician, after she sneaks into a performance with her friend Mizzi Schlager, the two young people quickly fall in love. Yet Lobheimer is haunted by a past he cannot escape: his illicit liaison with the married Baroness.
One day, the unfaithful Baroness’s husband learns of the affair. Baron v. Eggersdorff is a man of rigid conventions, and his rank and social status demand a formal reprisal. He challenges the young Lieutenant to a duel, a ritual steeped in tradition and pride. Lobheimer’s best friend, Oberleutnant Theo Kaiser, who had warned him to stay away from the affair, pleads for intervention, but the military leadership remains unmoved. Lobheimer strives to see [Christine] again the day before the duel, yet she is occupied with an audition to realize her dream of becoming a singer. Instead, he encounters her father, Der alte Weyring, a figure who had once suppressed his sister’s romantic prospects and now encourages the relationship out of guilt for the past.
The duel ends with Lobheimer fatally wounded, and the Baron’s honor is superficially restored as he departs victorious. The clash of outdated codes of honor weighs heavily on those who know the tragedy behind it, especially on Kaiser, who, embittered by the senseless custom, resigns from the army and returns to civilian life, pursuing a life with Mizzi.
News of Lobheimer’s death shatters Christine, and she makes a devastating choice, throwing herself out of the window of Lobheimer’s lodgings in a final act of despair. In the aftermath, the story lingers on the fragile line between duty and desire, and the consequences of a world where old rules govern lives with brutal finality. Binder, Cellist serves as a quiet, musical backdrop to the mounting tragedy, underscoring the emotional currents that pull the lovers apart and drive the narrative toward its heartrending conclusion.
