Legionnaire 1998

In Marseille in 1925, Alain Lefèvre [Jean-Claude Van Damme] is a French boxer who is pressured by gangster Lucien Galgani [Jim Carter] to throw a fight for money. Alain’s ex-fiancée, Katrina [Ana Sofrenović], forgives him for standing her up at the altar, and together they dream of slipping away to start a new life in America.

Alain refuses to take a dive and actually defeats his opponent, shattering Galgani’s plan. Soon after, Katrina is captured by Galgani’s men, and Alain is driven to a desperate act: he shoots and kills Galgani’s brother. To escape the grip of the mob, Alain signs up for the French Foreign Legion and is shipped to North Africa to defend France against a native Berber uprising led by Abd el-Krim [Kamel Krifa].

Along the way, Alain befriends a diverse group: Luther [Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje], an African-American man who fled injustice in the United States; Mackintosh [Nicholas Farrell], a former British Army major who was dishonorably discharged due to a gambling problem; and Guido Rosetti [Daniel Caltagirone], a naive Italian youth hoping to impress his fiancée back home. They learn that the Legion’s survival—rather than escape—is the only workable path to freedom.

After days of marching, the troops reach a small pond but are ambushed by the Berbers before they can fully quench their thirst. The assault costs Guido his life, and the survivors press on toward the Legion fort.

Galgani sends his thugs into the Legion to hunt down Alain. When a fellow officer reveals that he had been hired to kill Alain to repay his father’s gambling debts, the tension inside the fort spikes and the threat from outside grows even more dire. The colonel sends Luther on a dangerous reconnaissance mission to infiltrate the Berber camp, and Alain volunteers to go along, despite orders to stay put. Luther offers him a keepsake—a harmonica—as a symbol of friendship; that memory threads through the ensuing danger.

As the fort endures renewed attacks, Alain watches Luther return without his disguise and the Berbers close in. In the heat of the fighting, Alain makes the painful choice to shoot Luther, granting him a quick death rather than a prolonged suffering.

The Berber assault overwhelms the Legion, and Mackintosh shoots Galgani in a final act of reckoning. Katrina has managed to escape to America, pursuing the life she always wanted. In a grim moment of mercy, Mackintosh hands Alain a single bullet to end his own life, but Abd el-Krim intervenes, recognizing Alain’s courage and warning that continued French colonization will only invite further resistance. The Algerian desert becomes Alain’s lasting witness, and he emerges as the sole survivor, left to remember his friends and the hope of a future beyond conflict.

There is an alternate/deleted ending in which Alain rescues Katrina and originally plans to kill Galgani but does otherwise; the director and producer felt that would be too violent. A script to that ending exists at a New Year’s Eve party, where Alain aims his pistol at Galgani but ultimately walks away with Katrina.
