What Is Learning to Lie About?

Helmut, an 18‑year‑old student, falls for classmate Britta and joins a peace movement to be near her. Britta suddenly moves to San Francisco, lives with her father and starts a new boyfriend. In West Germany, 1982, 18-year-old Helmut falls in love with fellow pupil Britta. He joins a peace movement to get to know her better, attending meetings that reflect his idealism and a desire to belong to something larger than himself. Yet Britta suddenly moves to San Francisco to live with her father, and there she soon begins a new relationship that challenges the promise of their early connection. Back home, Helmut studies literature and politics in his hometown and starts a relationship with another girl from his former school, who is now studying medicine at the same university; their romance dissolves after he has an affair with her roommate, Barbara.
