In Provence, just before Christmas, a former prisoner suspected of robbery is dragged from his home by two policemen, taken to the police station, and beaten to death. The widow files a charge, and the case is assigned to the magistrate Bernard Level for judicial investigation. The crime shatters the quiet routine of a small town, and the momentum of an official cover-up begins to unfold as the investigation starts to take shape.

The force of denial comes quickly: both the two policemen and the on‑duty inspector, Inspecteur Bertrand, deny any wrongdoing, as does the one other policeman in the station and the two men who were in custody, all insisting that the death was an accident—perhaps a heart attack. Yet the autopsy is explicit, leaving little room for doubt and forcing Level to confront a web of false testimony that must be broken if justice is to be found.

Level’s determination yields two crucial witnesses: a prostitute who was in custody at the time but was whisked out of town by the police, and a bartender who served the dead man on his way home for the last time. These fresh accounts push the case toward prosecution of the two policemen and of the inspector who has been covering for them, a decision that places Level at odds with powerful interests and exposes a dangerous sting of intimidation.

As the trial approaches, the pressure mounts. By the time the case reaches court, all the witnesses and the widow’s counsel have been silenced through fear, while Level himself comes under intense coercion. His personal circle is hit hard—his son is targeted with marijuana planted on him, and his girlfriend, the Italian antiques dealer Danièle Lebegue, faces deportation after being implicated in a stolen object case.

Despite the presiding judge’s efforts to elicit truth, the proceedings slide toward a foregone conclusion: the three guilty men are acquitted. The verdict leaves the magistrate to weigh a future that now seems uncertain and unsettled, challenging him to decide how—or whether—to continue a path defined by moral duty in the face of overwhelming pressure. The film closes on a note of unresolved tension, underscoring the cost of standing up for justice in a system under strain.
