Last Stop 174 follows Sandro Rosa do Nascimento, Michel Gomes, a young man whose life spirals through poverty, stigma, and a moment that would linger in Brazilian memory: the hijacking of Bus 174 in Jardim Botânico in 2000.

The film opens with a harrowing scene: a woman hands over her child, Alessandro, to a debt collector under threat, a moment depicted with stark realism as Alessandro is portrayed by Marcelo Mello Jr.. This act sets in motion a painful search for belonging and safety that threads through Sandro’s life.

The woman later remarries a pastor, clinging to faith as a beacon that might reunite her with Sandro. Yet the boy she eventually encounters is not her son; he is another child whose mother was murdered in front of him. This twist anchors the film’s exploration of mistaken identities, longing, and the hollow promises often offered by well-meaning adults who cannot fully protect the vulnerable.

Sandro’s path leads him to Rio, where he grows up near the Candelária Church and endures the brutal violence that marks the city’s margins. He survives the years of hardship, moving through the favela, navigating run-ins with the law, and forming complicated relationships, all while charity workers try to help him find stability and a sense of home.
