In Yugoslavia, 1999, the Andrich family gathers for a joyful Christmas service, where young Katarina (Madison Ingoldsby) showcases her talent by singing in the choir. Her proud parents, Petra (Emma Thompson) and Ivan (Boris Isakovic), along with her sister Marta (Lucy Miller), look on with admiration, though Marta’s attention drifts to one of the other choir girls.
Fast forward to London, England in 2017, and Katarina has transformed into Kate (Emilia Clarke), a woman now estranged from her family, especially from her mother Petra and sister Marta (Lydia Leonard). After a night out, she ends up in a stranger’s apartment. However, her morning is interrupted by the man’s wife, leading to Kate being unceremoniously ejected onto the street. This prompts her to reflect on her dismal life.
As an elf at a Christmas shop run by Santa (Michelle Yeoh), Kate finds herself in a job filled with trials and errors. Santa sees potential in her, yet is frustrated by her habitual mistakes. A visit from Marta urges Kate to step outside and confront their mother, a task she wishes to avoid. At work, Kate encounters a charming yet quirky man named Tom Webster (Henry Golding). Their initial meeting takes a comical turn when a bird unfortunately chooses Kate’s face for a target.
Outside her job, Kate tries to find refuge with her friends Jenna and Rufus, but her past blunders haunt her, including a previous incident involving a burned model ship. Her aspirations of auditioning for a theater show lead to disappointment when her tardiness forces her to perform without accompaniment, resulting in a rejection from the judges.
One day, as she navigates her chaotic life, a Danish man (Peter Mygind) walks into the store, revealing his connection with Santa, which Kate keenly observes. An invite from Tom offers her some reprieve, leading to a delightful evening out. As their bond grows, Kate discovers Tom’s commitment to volunteering at a homeless shelter and they share light-hearted moments ice-skating before being escorted out by security.
However, upon her return to the store, Kate discovers it had been burglarized; torn between a lapse in responsibility and facing Santa’s disappointment, she learns that her boss cleverly staged the break-in for insurance. After multiple mishaps, Jenna and Rufus cut ties with her, leaving Kate feeling isolated.
On one of their visits back to Tom’s place, a vulnerable Kate reveals her past struggle with heart illness, which has led her to feel inadequate. Their budding romance takes a hit when Tom retreats, insisting that Kate cannot continue to rely on him, deepening her sense of despair.
Family dynamics at a dinner reveal tensions among them. Marta confronts Kate’s perceived helplessness, to which Kate retaliates by disclosing Marta’s relationship with Alba (Jade Anouka). The evening hits a nerve as Petra and Ivan are called out for their conflicting parenting styles.
Determined to turn her life around, Kate seeks Tom at the shelter, only to be swept into volunteering, where she finds herself singing Christmas carols outside, dressed as an elf. Her journey toward betterment extends to her family; she reconciles with Marta and embraces Alba warmly.
During a bus ride, Kate stands up for a Yugoslavian couple facing discrimination, speaking to them in their language and introducing herself as Katarina. She begins to excel at work, forming a genuine connection with Santa, who shares that she only uses her nickname for work-related matters.
However, a visit to Tom’s apartment reveals a heartbreaking truth: he had passed away months prior, and his heart was transplanted into Kate. In a poignant realization, it dawns on her that last Christmas, Tom had literally given her his heart. Overwhelmed by grief, Kate seeks solace in a park bench, a sacred spot filled with memories of Tom.
Just when she feels lost, Tom’s spirit visits her, offering words of comfort and assurance that everything will be alright. In a fulfilling culmination of her journey, Kate successfully orchestrates a Christmas show with the help of shelter patrons. As she graces the stage in a festive dress, surrounded by family who come to support her, they all join in a heartfelt performance of “Last Christmas.”
