The poor trio of best friends Do, Re and Mi live in a simple treehouse high in the forest, where they share the chores of gathering, cutting, and selling firewood at the local market. When they are driven out by a landowner, they wander deeper into the trees and one night hear a voice calling for help. Fear of a trick from a spirit lingers, but curiosity leads them to follow the voice to a wounded bamboo tree. The tree pleads for help, insisting a spear lodged in its side must be pulled out. They heed the plea, the spear is removed, and the bamboo blossoms into a fairy princess—the Tuan Puteri Buluh Betong, the Giant Bamboo Princess. She explains her lineage and that she is the daughter of Anak Buloh Betong, a connection that ties this magical encounter to a larger folklore reverberation. She thanks them and grants each of them a magical gift: Do receives a flying magic carpet; Re a telescope that can reveal anything the viewer wishes to see; and Mi a harmonica that can grant any wish.
Inspired by their newfound powers, the trio sets out to change their fortunes. Re uses the telescope to uncover a royal opportunity: the Sultan is seeking brave men to become his Admirals. The trio enters the challenge, Mi uses the harmonica to amplify their strength, and they win with ease, earning prestigious positions as Admirals. Their success takes them to their next mission, aiding a neighboring kingdom named Pasir Dua Butir, which is under attack by Fasola. Fasola is a former Minister of Defense who betrayed the realm after a failed marriage proposal to Princess Puncak Mahligai was rejected. In a ruthless act, he sacks the kingdom, harms civilians, and imprisons the princess. The Sultan promises the princess’s hand in marriage to anyone who can defeat Fasola, and the three Admirals eagerly accept the task.
The ensuing campaign sees them overcoming Fasola’s formidable army, often aided by Mi’s harmonica causing enemies to dance and stumble in comical fashion. They finally confront Fasola himself. After a heated exchange where Fasola underestimates them, Do lands a direct blow, only to discover Fasola’s magical invulnerability to ordinary weapons. A clever use of Re’s telescope reveals Fasola’s real weakness: he can only be killed by a sharp bamboo aimed at his sole. Mi wields the harmonica to conjure a sharp bamboo, which Do wields in a decisive strike. Fasola pleads for mercy, but he is slain, and the trio frees the princess.
With the princess rescued, all three Admirals fall for her. In a surprising turn, the princess declares she will marry all three, and they accept—with a light nod to unconventional love, as she posits that if men can practice polygamy, so can women. The Sultan, impressed by their loyalty and exploits, contemplates a wedding partnership, and offers three palace handmaidens as wives for the Admirals. However, the handmaidens turn out to be old, ugly hags, which the Sultan jokingly reveals were meant to test the Admirals’ resolve. Fearing a fate worse than imprisonment, the trio escapes on their magic carpets, while Mi’s harmonica sends the hags into itchy torment. They ride off into the unknown, laughing at the mischief they left behind and savoring the freedom of their crystalline alliance and adventurous future.
