The film centers on Seafield, an eccentric, alcoholic sea captain who carries the weight of a lake monster’s past that claimed his father. To rid the region of the creature, he assembles a crack team: Sean Shaughnessy, the weapons expert, the sonar operator Nedge Pepsi, and Dick Flynn, a former United States Navy officer. Together, they journey to Lighthouse Island, perched on Lake Michigan, with a single goal in mind: kill the monster that haunts the waters and the nearby shores.

Their mission tests their resolve from the start. The first two ambushes fail to end the threat, and during the second attempt, the monster strikes at Dick, leaving him injured but alive. To press forward, they turn to Seafield’s brother, Ashcroft, hoping a fresh plan might tilt the odds in their favor. On a night shrouded in fog and fear, they finally confront the creature, which leaves them a cryptic note: it will meet them in their dreams.

In a haunting dream sequence, Seafield witnesses Dick Flynn being assaulted by the monster, a moment that gnaws at him even after waking. The creature then presents an egg, calling it a peace offering. The morning after this surreal encounter, Seafield has Sean Shaughnessy shoot the egg, hoping to sever any supernatural thread the monster has woven. Yet their third attempt is sabotaged when Dick, believing the egg might be a lure, hurls its fragments into the lake after hearing voices that cry out for the egg’s return. The monster erupts in rage, killing Sean when it discovers the egg’s remains.

The funeral for Sean deepens the tragedy. Dick, furious and pained, learns that the monster’s offspring was, in fact, his unborn son, and he abandons the expedition in anger. Back at base, Seafield confesses a hard truth to Nedge Pepsi: he’s neither a captain nor wealthy, as he once claimed. The revelation devastates Nedge, who leaves him in the wake of the confession.

That night, Ashcroft warns that Seafield is cursed; the only way to lift the curse is to kill the monster. Desperate, Seafield tries to recruit Dick and Nedge again, but they refuse his offer. As the night deepens, the ghost of Sean returns, haunting Seafield as he fights to reach Lighthouse Island by boat. Meanwhile, on the island, Ashcroft is attacked and killed by the monster, a grim sign of the monster’s growing power.

On the return voyage, the boat seems to drift backward, threatening to strand them again. Seafield fights to steer the vessel toward the island, and a grisly clue awaits him—Ashcroft’s severed head, which reveals a painful family history: their mother was never truly absent because their father killed her, a revelation that casts new light on the siblings’ origins. The voyage ends with Seafield anchoring on the island’s shore and descending into the catacombs, where he discovers his father’s ghost army awaiting him.

The specter army pledges to aid in the final confrontation, but the monster proves formidable, overwhelming the spectral fury and challenging Seafield to face the creature alone. As Seafield inches toward the monster’s lair, he encounters Sean’s ghost once more. A sword that Dick once lost lies at his feet, and Seafield slices Sean in half, though the ghost regenerates and persists.

Inside the monster’s lair, Seafield confronts the creature, a female semi-humanoid being. The two clash, and the monster drops a bombshell: she claims they are siblings. She narrates a brutal backstory: their drunk father learned the truth about their mother’s true form only after a stop at a Milwaukee liquor store that closed too late. In a fit of horror and revelation, the father killed the mother, and when the monster reached killing age, she killed him in revenge. She further reveals a plan to heal the family’s wounds—impregnating a nearby naked man (Dick) as a peace offering to Seafield—but Seafield’s rejection comes when he destroys the egg.

Seafield prepares to accept the monster’s tale, moving in for a reconciliation hug. Instead, he pulls hidden knives and ends her life. Yet the truth of the night’s stories unravels in a cruel twist: the monster admits that she lied about much of what she told him, even the closing time she cited at the liquor store. As the triumph glows briefly on Seafield’s face, fate takes another turn—Sean’s ghost emerges and harpoons him in the eye. The killer’s thanks echo as Seafield accepts his fate, and the film closes with him passing into the afterlife, transforming into a ghost alongside the restless spirits of Lighthouse Island.
