Albert Corey Haim hides from his father in the attic, as his mother warned him to stay up there regardless of what he heard. He obeys and is forced to listen to his father murder his mother, after which the man warns that Albert has the same evil inside of him. Albert is eventually discovered and sent to live with a foster mother.
Many years later Albert returns to the house with his friends and his girlfriend Sarah Lauren Parker, who hopes to use the time to write. Their arrival is far from welcome, and the group is urged to leave. The townspeople fear that history will repeat itself, and a legend around the lake speaks of an evil spirit responsible for a string of brutal murders in the area. Each tragedy ends with a single child surviving, a detail that deepens the town’s unease.
A local waitress is slaughtered near the house by a force that seems to be a wolf, even though there are no reports of wolves in the area. Sheriff Harris Bo Hopkins warns the group to stay close to the house, but the warning goes largely unheeded.
That night, Albert sees a vision of a young boy by the water and runs off. He soon begins murdering his friends, driven by the malevolent spirit, until only Sarah remains alive. When he reaches her room with the intent to kill again, Sarah is revealed to be possessed as well, with the spirit claiming to be Albert’s mother. A horrified, yet still-possessed Albert then kills Sarah with an axe.
The narrative cuts to a deputy explaining that Albert was found at the scene and taken into custody, with the expectation that he will spend the rest of his life in a mental institution. It’s revealed that he had previously been institutionalized for murdering his foster mother. The deputy also notes that only two of the three women who had accompanied Albert were found, implying that Sarah’s body is missing.
In the closing moments, Sheriff Harris attempts to burn down Albert’s family home, but the flames fail to take hold. A local Native American man explains that the spirit will not allow the house to burn and will return after it has rested, hinting that the evil may endure beyond the flames.
