In 1972, a tense chess match between two young players, David and Peter Sanderson, ends in a brutal turn of events: David, the loser, stabs Peter with a fountain pen. The public humiliation and the shock of defeat ripple through their lives, unraveling a family in crisis. The boy’s parents’ marriage dissolves in the wake of the incident; his father leaves for good, and his mother dies by suicide, a moment that he ultimately retreats from, clinging to his locked-away chessboard. The years that follow see the boy drift in and out of asylums and foster care, a shadowed path that keeps him largely out of view.
Meanwhile, Peter Sanderson rises from that brutal start to become one of the youngest and most celebrated chess grandmasters in history. He grows into a brilliant yet troubled widower who cherishes a beloved daughter, Erica Sanderson. Yet fame does not shield him from danger. He suddenly finds himself a suspect in the murder of a casual lover, a accusation that casts a pall over his remarkable career and personal life. As more violent deaths occur, the investigation intensifies and a serial killer seems to be at work behind the headlines.
In this high-stakes maze, newly appointed Police Captain Frank Sedman and his partner Detective Andy Wagner take the lead, tracing the killer’s movements and connecting the strands that tie the current murders to the prodigy’s name. The case grows colder and more elusive as the body count climbs, prompting a careful, persistent pursuit of truth by law enforcement. At the center of it all is psychologist Kathy Sheppard, brought in to assess whether the chess prodigy is as innocent as he insists, or if there are darker motives at play beneath the public persona of a genius.
The film weaves between past and present, painting a portrait of talent tested by trauma and fate. It invites viewers to weigh history against present danger, to consider how a single defining moment can cascade into decades of consequence, and to watch as a city’s detectives close in on a killer whose methods are as precise and patient as a grandmaster’s endgame. The story never rushes to judgment; instead, it builds a careful, unsettling atmosphere where every move could reveal a new truth, and where the bond between intellect and vulnerability becomes a crucible for survival.
