The film centers on Kawariki Calvin Tuteao, a man who appears to live a calm, contented life with his wife Annabelle Nathalie Boltt. His father, Hamiora George Henare, is nearing retirement, and Maori tradition weighs on Kawariki as it asks him to prepare to take on the family leadership. Yet he must confront a lifelong secret — that he has been gay since childhood — a truth he has long kept buried while he seeks connection outside the marriage, including a growing relationship with Dean O’Gorman, who plays Chris.

Things intensify when his mother, Grace Vicky Haughton, discovers him kissing Chris on the beach after a heated quarrel and orders him out of the family home.
