A story has a beginning, middle, and end, but they need not arrive in that order. Girish Kasarvalli’s award-winning Kanasembo Kudureyaneri (based on Amaresh Nugadoni’s Savaari) plays with time and perspective to explore fate, belief, and village life in a quietly thought-provoking way.

Irya, Vaijanath Biradar, the gravedigger, moves through a village where Siddhas—nomadic sages believed to signal auspicious change—are said to mark moments when death could lead a soul to heaven, especially if their arrival coincides with a death. Irya and his wife, Rudri, Umashree, learn of these Siddha visits through dreams. In Irya’s worldview, a Siddha appearing in a dream often signals a death in the village, yet one day he is told there will be no death.

Seeking proof, Irya goes to the house of an ailing elder, only to be sent back by the caretaker saying all is well. Then comes a test: a Siddha does not arrive in the village despite Rudri’s dream, shaking Irya’s faith in the protectors he believes Siddhas to be.

Is Irya an easy prey to superstition, or are villagers manipulating his dreams for their own ends?

Beyond this personal struggle, the film quietly critiques a materialistic outlook that can commodify belief and ritual, prompting viewers to wonder whether progress means discarding these beliefs or simply reinterpreting them for a modern context.

While the first half may prompt skepticism about Irya’s and Rudri’s dreams, the second half reframes the question: what looks superstitious to some may be a meaningful way of life to others; what seems real may be illusion, and what appears unreal might carry its own truth, especially when faith remains steadfast.

Ultimately, the film suggests that, through belief and perseverance, people can endure and perhaps achieve what matters most to them.
