Spoilers ahead
Hajime Hanaoaka centers the story on a man facing the quiet shock of retirement after 34 years at Tokyo Co. Ltd. On December 25, his birthday, he plans to leave the company he has given his life to, and the film follows him as he moves through the rituals of a weekday—the ritual of commuting, the ritual of work, the ritual of questioning what remains when the daily grind ends. The opening scenes catch him on a familiar train ride, a man whose features betray the weight of years spent in administrative service. He discovers, with a mix of sorrow and clarity, just how much of his identity has been entwined with his job, and how daunting the loss of that daily structure will be.
