In a steam-washed era on Hinomoto, a mysterious virus drags humanity into a fight for survival. Those infected transform into Kabane, a relentless breed of undead whose most troubling trait is a glowing golden heart protected by a tough iron shell. These creatures are incredibly hard to defeat with ordinary weapons, and only two brutal routes can finally stop them: piercing the heart or completely severing a vital body part, such as the head. The struggle unfolds against a backdrop of industrial progress, where humanity clings to life inside fortress-like stations and relies on fortified steam locomotives to move people and goods between them.
On a day when the world above ground turns violently unstable, a hayajirō hijacked by Kabane crashes into Aragane Station, letting the invasion spills over the walls and plunging the city into chaos. In the wake of catastrophe, a young engineer named Ikoma pushes the limits of his own invention: a weapon designed to pierce Kabane armor, known as the Piercing Gun (Tsuranuki Zutsu). His daring test yields a grim paradox—he is infected during the process, yet somehow resists the virus long enough to remain among the living, albeit as something new: a Kabaneri, a human fused with Kabane blood and instinct.
Guided by the enigmatic Mumei, a Kabaneri who seems to walk the line between ally and mystery, Ikoma and the station’s handful of survivors rally to press onward. The pair boards a hayajirō named Kōtetsujō, often called the Iron Fortress, and set out across a treacherous landscape where Kabane hordes prowl the tracks and the city’s fragile safety nets fray at the edges. Along the way, they encounter other people—fighters, engineers, and kin who weigh on the mission—but the immediate priority remains clear: reach a safer haven while fending off the tireless onslaught of Kabane.
As the journey unfolds, the group learns that every stop brings new dangers and new questions about what it means to be human when the line between person and monster blurs. The Piercing Gun proves invaluable, but Ikoma’s transformation raises deeper questions about power, responsibility, and the price of survival. In the wind-whipped corridors of approaching fortresses and on the roaring rails that cut through the landscape, the survivors confront the relentless march of Kabane, trusting in ingenuity and each other to push through the dark toward a glimmer of hope.
