Anderson .Paak, a drummer with a steady, long-running gig at a Los Angeles cash bar, crosses paths with Jee Young Han as Yeji when she agrees to sing with him. What begins as a connection over music blossoms into a relationship, but Yeji ultimately leaves because BJ’s priority remains the rhythm and the show, not the romance.

Twelve years slip by. BJ keeps pounding the same beat at the Cash Bar, until a late night pushes him over the edge: Cash fires him after driving away the last regular. BJ’s mom Yvette Nicole Brown Brenda and Cash urge him to seize a bigger chance—move to South Korea to join the live backing band for the televised K-pop contest, Wildcard, with Diamond (the show’s distant aunt) hosting. The opportunity is clear, but it comes with its own set of risks and revelations.

In Seoul, BJ shaves off his dreads and, after a soggy morning of room-service indulgence, wakes to housekeeping and sprints across town to the Wildcard studio. He arrives more than twenty minutes late, and Diamond makes it plain that tardiness could cost him the job. On day one, he meets Tae Young, a quick-witted 12-year-old, who introduces himself as Bobby Johnson—or BJ—sparking a playful suggestion that Tae pick a different name. BJ is introduced to Tae’s circle of friends—BNB—and he starts to gauge Kang’s influence as a major gatekeeper in the competition.

A spontaneous drum solo during a rehearsal catches Kang’s eye, and when the band finishes, he vents his frustration about being upstaged. That moment foreshadows the power Kang will have over the contest’s landscape. Meanwhile, the backing band and Tae’s group settle into a rhythm: BJ teaches them how to scat and to ride the groove, and the young performers respond with surprising talent. In a moment of personal resonance, BJ and Tae share a private walk when they run into Tae’s mother, Yeji, revealing a surprising family twist: Tae’s father is not Idris Elba, as Yeji had once insinuated, but BJ himself.

BJ confronts Tae with the revelation, and the two form a bond built on trust and an awkward-but-true connection. He reaches out to Brenda, who is there to help navigate the new reality, and Cash encourages a path that would turn Tae into a K-pop star. The family’s newly formed unity becomes a core engine for what follows.

The next day, BJ takes Tae out for a father-and-son day of pampering and bonding—sauna, massage, and long talks that peel back layers of doubt and longing. Their quest for a perfect performance leads them to an Earth Wind & Fire show at a Hard Rock Cafe, where a K-pop group’s arrival changes the atmosphere. Tae declares BJ as a legendary drummer and a fan, and the gig doors swing open for them to jam, especially since they haven’t seen many Black musicians in the venue for weeks. The father and son train together, and Yeji joins them in the studio to complete the trio.

As Tae climbs toward the final eight, the trio spends a day of warmth—video games, ice cream, and quiet conversations—before the night exposes the deeper questions they all carry about whom Tae’s mother told him his father was. The revelation stirs emotion and a few unresolved tensions, but they press on with a shared goal. Kang’s persistence grows, yet Diamond remains determined to protect Tae and BJ’s place in his life, pushing BJ to stay or leave depending on the mood of the competition. The pressure culminates in a bold call to step back from the spotlight or seize it with both hands.

Diamond ultimately lures BJ away with the promise of an opening act for a former K-pop winner in Saudi Arabia. What begins as a tempting detour becomes a dream that reorients BJ’s priorities, pulling him back toward Tae and Yeji in Korea. Upon his return, the trio reconciles, and BJ helps choreograph BNB’s final performance. Brenda and Cash appear in the audience, ready to witness Tae’s journey up close.

In the final stretch, Tae’s team narrows to him and Kang, and the competition reaches its dramatic finish. Tae’s undeniable growth and the family’s renewed unity shine through as the show crowns a winner that isn’t only about glory but about the bond that holds them all together. In the end, Tae finishes in second place, but the family remains intact and connected, proving that their shared love of music can outlast the fiercest rivalry.
