Coco Chavez, Carla Gugino and Junior Armstrong, Simon Baker, are two small-time criminals who make money through blackmail and sex scams. They dream of moving up to the big leagues by kidnapping a computer genius and holding him for a $4 million ransom. To pull off the caper, they recruit Lizard Browning, Gil Bellows, and Ruben Rubenbauer, Til Schweiger, whose combined skills with gadgets, guns, and grit are meant to deliver the perfect crime. The plan hits a brutal snag when the group accidentally kills the wife of Louisiana Senator Rupert Hornbeck, Hal Holbrook.
Wrapped in guilt, Coco and the crew scramble to cover their tracks as a relentless pursuit closes in. On their trail are veteran FBI agent Sadie Hawkins, Emma Thompson, and grizzled New Orleans detective David Friedman, Alan Rickman, two officers who bicker and banter while they dissect the case, trading stories about the pressures of the job and the fragility of personal ethics. The pursuit is complicated by henchmen hired by the senator to extract revenge, introducing a layer of danger and violence that the protagonists hadn’t anticipated. As the investigation deepens, hints surface that the murder might not be a pure accident, and Senator Hornbeck’s threatening posture toward the detectives raises suspicions of political meddling rather than simple obstruction.
With the net tightening and time running out, the criminals face a moral reckoning as cracks appear within their own ranks. The story tightens into a nerve-wracking showdown where loyalties are tested, betrayals surface, and the line between victim and aggressor becomes dangerously blurred. In the end, what began as a bold, high-stakes plan spirals into a crisis of conscience and power, leaving the audience to weigh the cost of ambition against the costs of violence.
