In Monte Carlo, Marc, Alain Delon the handsome card sharp, narrowly escapes American gangsters who have been ordered to kill him after an affair with the boss’s wife. He finds sanctuary at a mission for the poor, where Barbara, Lola Albright a wealthy widow, discovers him and hires him to drive her as her chauffeur.

At Barbara’s chateau, her niece Melinda, Jane Fonda, becomes attracted to Marc, and he learns that Barbara is hiding her lover Vincent in the chateau’s hidden rooms and passageways. Vincent, André Oumansky, is a bank robber hunted by the police for murdering Barbara’s husband, and he and Barbara secretly plot to kill Marc so Vincent can use Marc’s passport to flee to South America. Marc and Barbara begin an affair, but their truce is shattered when Vincent uncovers the liaison. He is killed by the American gangsters who mistake him for Marc, while Barbara dies in the resulting ambush.

Marc and Melinda resolve to dispose of the two bodies, yet the plan takes a darker turn. When Melinda learns that Marc plans to leave without her, she tricks the police into believing that Marc is guilty and forces him to hide in the chateau’s secret rooms, effectively making him her prisoner, just as Vincent had been her aunt’s.

The story unfolds with a web of deceit, passion, and danger set against a backdrop of wealth and opulent interiors, where loyalties blur and every move could reveal a deeper trap.
