Spoilers ahead
Tang Sanzang, Wen Zhang, embarks on a tale that unfolds before the famed Journey to the West, when the world is still figuring out where mercy ends and monsters begin. A quiet riverside village is disrupted by a strange aquatic menace, and a Taoist priest stakes his claim that the creature is the demon everyone fears. The villagers, swayed by fear and the priest’s provocation, lash out at the lone demon hunter who argues otherwise. The real threat resurfaces with a deadly, almost clinical ease, slaughtering many villagers, while Sanzang frees himself and, with the survivors, manages to beach the creature only to watch it shed its monstrous disguise and become a man.
