Jaanu 2020

K. Ramachandra, a.k.a. Ram, is a travel photographer who returns to his old high school and finds himself overwhelmed by a flood of memories. To reconnect with the people who shaped his youth, a reunion is arranged through the school WhatsApp group, gathering old friends and classmates for a night of reminiscence and reflection.

At the reunion, his friends Murali, Subhashini, and Sathish catch up with him, and Murali hesitantly mentions that Janaki, a.k.a. Jaanu, is visiting from Singapore, stirring a mix of anticipation and nostalgia in Ram. Ram and Jaanu have been close since tenth grade, with Jaanu’s gift for singing elevating their bond. Ram develops a quiet, growing love for her, and she seems to feel something too, a bond that both protect as the holidays draw to a close.

After their board exams, they share a moment where Jaanu asks him not to forget her until they meet again after the holidays. Jaanu arrives at the reunion and begins to search for Ram; when Subha points out his location, she walks toward him, and memories rush back. She remembers the first day of 11th grade, waiting in the classroom for Ram’s arrival that never came, only to learn that his family had relocated to Hyderabad due to his father’s financial troubles. Jaanu is left devastated, pining for Ram as the school years unfold without him.

Ram and Jaanu finally meet, but their first exchanges are awkward and tentative before they grow more comfortable with each other. Their friends casually discuss Jaanu’s married life in Singapore and reveal that Ram remains single and has not moved on. After the reunion party, they take a drive through the city, and Jaanu confesses how she could not forget Ram and would have traded anything to meet him once back then. Ram reveals that he once tried to meet her at her college, and that he and Satish waited in front of the college and passed on a message to a student, but Jaanu refused to meet him and asked him never to contact her again. He returns home heartbroken, and he never tries to reach out again.

Jaanu’s heartbreak is tempered by Ram’s admission that he had kept up with her life from afar, even glimpsing her at her wedding. She realizes that timing and misread signals helped keep them apart, and both feel the sting of missed opportunities. The pair resolve to spend the last hours of her visit together, hoping to salvage what remains of their relationship.

They wander the city, then settle into a restaurant where Ram’s photography students—who mistake Jaanu for his wife—prompt her to share their story. Jaanu obliges and improvises a version of how they finally met and fell in love, and Ram watches with a mix of embarrassment and tenderness as she spins their tale. The rain begins to fall, soaking both of them as they return to Ram’s apartment to refresh.

In the calm of Ram’s home, Jaanu voices a practical wish: that Ram move on, marry, and start a family. To ease the moment, she sings Ram’s favorite song, Yamuna Thatilo from Dalapathi, a moment that carries both sweetness and regret. Ram shows her a personal collection of memories—love poems, dried flowers, and their old school uniforms—creating a tangible bridge between their past and present. Time slips away, and with heavy hearts they return to the hotel to prepare for Jaanu’s flight.

At the airport, Ram escorts Jaanu to the boarding gate, and they share a tearful, bittersweet farewell. Back home, Ram discovers Jaanu’s clothes drying and folds them away with the rest of his cherished memories, a quiet ritual that signals the end of a chapter as the screen fades to black.
