One day, a mysterious Lisa enters the scene, claiming she has been abandoned by her husband, and she is soon followed by the enigmatic [Tony Fernandes]. The arrival of these two outsiders unsettles the already delicate balance of loyalties and affections in the village.

As time passes, [Maria] and [Tony Fernandes] find themselves drawn to one another, their bond growing despite the tremors of competing affections—most notably from [Simon], who loves Maria and hopes to marry her. Yet the relationship is challenged not only by romantic rivals but also by whispers and warnings from those around them. A gypsy palm-reader adds to the tension, cautioning Maria that disaster could come at the hands of a stranger.

Beneath the outward charm, [Tony Fernandes] leads a double life. He is revealed to be a gold smuggler, moving contraband between Indian ports still under colonial rule. He had arrived in the village fleeing the Bombay police and pursuing Lisa, his former accomplice who betrayed him in the past. In the village, he works to covertly recover hidden smuggled gold by buying fish at the local auctions and weaving Maria into his schemes, all while nurturing a plan to betray her by selling her to Arab traders to settle his mounting debts.

As the net tightens, the authorities close in during a climactic pursuit. In a desperate bid to escape, Tony abandons Maria at sea. Yet Maria’s unwavering faith and earnest plea for his better nature strike a chord, convincing him to surrender to the authorities. The story ends with Maria vowful and steadfast, promising to wait for his return after his imprisonment, as the community wrestles with forgiveness, loyalty, and the possibility of redemption.
