On a windswept, remote island, Captain Labische arrives determined to crack down on the island’s lawlessness, a mission sharpened by rumors of voodoo rites carried out by the evil priest Damballah. He begins by mapping the lay of the land, focusing his scrutiny on the powerful local tycoon Carl van Molder, whose wealth and influence cast a long shadow over daily life. Van Molder warns Labische not to interfere, setting up a tense clash between official authority and the island’s older, darker forces.

Anabella Vandenberg, van Molder’s visiting niece and a staunch temperance crusader, arrives with a practical demand: to secure funding for the International Anti-Saloon League. She finds herself drawn to Lt. Andrew Wilhelm, a capable police officer who enjoys a drink but is moved by her conviction and resolve, creating a quiet, personal tension amid the larger danger surrounding them.

Meanwhile, the island’s ritual world grows more menacing: beautiful native girls are being transformed into zombies, and a striking snake dancer named Kalea leads them in attacks against anyone who dares to meddle with their unholy rites. Kalea becomes a chilling symbol of the cult’s power and the peril that outsiders invite by probing too deeply into the island’s secrets.

In a dream, Anabella Vandenberg wakes up in a coffin; in a second coffin lies a lookalike, Mary Ann Vandenberg, accompanied by a snake. The lookalike pursues and then kisses her, heightening the sense of danger and confusion that surrounds the island’s strange happenings. The sequence heightens the stakes for Anabella, Labische, and Wilhelm as they navigate a web of deception and fear.

When Anabella is kidnapped and prepared for the cult’s latest human sacrifice, Labische and Wilhelm must infiltrate the inner circle to stage a rescue. As they press closer to the truth, they uncover the secret identity of the all-powerful Damballah, a revelation that reframes everything they thought they knew about the island’s power and the forces at play.
