Belmullet, a heavily indebted Irish village under the sway of English mogul Lord Kevin McNally Hailstock, discovers that its last remaining pub, still owned by the locals, is up for sale. To block the buyout, they hatch a bold plan: sponsor an international poetry contest, with the winner receiving the deed to the pub.

In Los Angeles, Jimmy McDevitt Eddie Griffin is a quick-witted hustler who struggles to pay his landlord and other creditors. Fresh from leaving his violent ex-fiancée at the wedding altar, he ekes out a living through grifting and break-dancing on the street. Hoping that winning the contest will settle his debts, he submits plagiarized lyrics to the rap song “The Good Fight” and emerges victorious.

The villagers are surprised to meet him, assuming he’s a typical white Irishman based on his surname, until he finally arrives in Belmullet and shakes up the town. Despite his brash manner, he wins over locals by offering drinks on the house on his first night in business, quickly building a reputation.

He forms a budding bond with Maureen Anna Friel Duffy, a widowed mother and folk singer who performs at the pub; together they explore the parallels between the Irish past and the histories of Africans forcibly relocated to the United States. The partnership deepens as they share stories and music, weaving a sense of shared history through the town’s struggle.

Lord Hailstock’s plan includes offering Jimmy a share of profits if he sells out the town, a move that would hand Belmullet to a theme-park project named Leprechaun World, built on stereotypes that many find offensive. Three local bullies threaten him throughout the ordeal, repeatedly testing his resolve and flinging him through several houses.

In the end, Jimmy confesses the truth to the townspeople, makes amends, and vows to save Belmullet from monopolization and the loss of its cherished pub. The story blends sharp humor with social commentary, showing how a small community can unite across borders and differences to defend what matters most.
