What Is In the Shadow of the Sun About?
The premise of In the Shadow of the Sun without spoilers.
It draws on Derek Jarman’s fascination with alchemy as a metaphor for re‑processing Super‑8 film. Jarman called the union of light and matter “an alchemical conjunction” and used superimposed images to create dreamlike symbolism. Initially titled English Apocalypse, the final title comes from a 17th‑century alchemical text where “shadow of the sun” referred to the philosopher’s stone. The work was conceived as an ambient video meant to enrich an environment.
