Meg Tilly’s Jennifer Colton is a divorced architect and devoted mother who retains custody of her five-year-old daughter Mandy Colton while her ex-husband is granted regular visitations. Jennifer notices her daughter’s restless sleeping and increasingly violent episodes, and she becomes horrified to suspect that Walt Colton may be sexually abusing her. With the support of her cousin and attorney Howard Feldon, her next-door neighbor and trusted friend Nora, and a team of doctors and therapists—Dr. Garfield, Dr. Innes, and Dr. Roedicker—Jennifer fights to shield Mandy from harm and to suspend the father’s unsupervised access.
The legal battle grows tense as the court, requiring ironclad proof, refuses to curb Walt’s visitation rights, leaving Jennifer to face a system that often seems stacked against a protective parent. When she resists letting him see Mandy, the judge finds Jennifer in contempt and orders her into county jail, a painful turn that shakes the family’s sense of safety and stability. The courtroom drama lays bare the friction between a mother’s resolve and the realities of the law, testing Jennifer’s willingness to do whatever it takes to keep Mandy out of harm.
As the pressure mounts, Jennifer weighs drastic steps to protect her daughter. She confronts a heart-wrenching choice and, driven by love and fear, contemplates radical actions that might keep Mandy safe—even if it means breaking the law. The film tracks the emotional and moral stakes of a mother who refuses to surrender her child to a dangerous environment, ultimately hinting at a controversial, high-risk path she may take to ensure Mandy can live free from abuse, even if that path leads her into prison.
Throughout this ordeal, the film examines the fragility of family, the limits of legal protections, and the extraordinary lengths a parent will go to for the safety and future of a child.
