I’ll Be Yours 1947

Louise Ginglebusher Deanna Durbin is a young woman from the small town of Cobleskill who travels to New York City to chase a dream in show business. In a cozy cafe, she befriends a kindly but irascible waiter, Wechsberg William Bendix, and crosses paths with a bearded, struggling attorney, George Prescott Tom Drake. She lands a job as an usherette at Buckingham Music Hall, run by Mr. Buckingham Walter Catlett, an old family friend of her father.

During her shifts at the Music Hall, she runs into Wechsberg again, and when a bold harasser targets her, she deftly defuses the situation by claiming Wechsberg is her husband. He invites her to a high-society gathering the next night at the Savoy Ritz. Louise borrows a gown and attends, slipping past the headwaiter by presenting herself as one of the entertainers. There, she meets the host, J. Conrad Nelson Adolphe Menjou, a philandering meat magnate who asks her to sing a number.

Her performance is so moving that Nelson offers to star her in a Broadway musical. To ward off his obvious interest, Louise tells him she is married. In a bold, if ethically tangled, move, she hands him the business card that George Prescott had given her and asserts that George is her husband.

Nelson visits Prescott in his shabby storefront law office the next day and proposes to hire him as the legal face of his company. Prescott, initially wary, is reassured by Nelson’s claim that he needs an honest lawyer as a role model for his staff—the truth, however, is that Nelson wants Prescott on a short leash so he can keep him occupied while he pursues Louise.

As complications unfold, Louise convinces George to shave off his old beard, unveiling a younger, more handsome man. A moonlit stroll follows, and George is moved to propose marriage to Louise, adding a new layer of hope and complication to the tale. Ambition, romance, and a test of ethics intertwine as the pair navigate love, luck, and the pressures of a world where show business and business affairs collide.
