The film opens in Los Angeles, where Doug Blake is dumped as a manager by Gary Mitchell. He heads to New York City to find a new singer to replace Gary on the Hour of Enchantment radio show. In New York, he discovers Martha Gibson turning records in a jukebox factory and brings her to Los Angeles, hoping to introduce her to Felix Hofer, a wealthy sponsor. The plan is cluttered by a string of miscommunications, and Doug soon learns that Martha is the widow of a soldier who died in World War II and has a small son, Freddie.
Back in Los Angeles, Martha begins to fall for Gary. Doug takes her to a party at Gary’s house, where Gary becomes drunk and cannot sing on his radio program. Martha steps in, replaces him, and rapidly finds success as the new on-air presence. Gary, whose ego has driven away the people who once supported him, cannot find anyone to hire or represent him. Knowing how Martha feels about Gary, Doug helps him stage a comeback, but Gary ultimately returns to his old ways and pushes Martha away. In the end, Martha realizes that she truly loves Doug, and the couple reconciles.
