I Love You, Alice B. Toklas! 1968

Attorney Harold Fine [Peter Sellers] is pressed to set a wedding date by his secretary/fiancée, Joyce [Joyce Van Patten]. After a fender bender, he ends up behind the wheel of a psychedelically painted station wagon, embarking on a road that nods to a changing era. At the funeral of his family’s butcher, he meets Nancy [Leigh Taylor-Young], a barefoot, free-spirited hippie who instantly pulls him into a warmer, more carefree world. She’s not alone in this new circle—Herbie [David Arkin], Harold’s hippie brother, is part of the counterculture scene, offering Harold a glimpse of a life that thrives on spontaneity and color rather than convention.

She spends the night with him in his home, and departs without telling him about the brownies she left behind. Unaware of what they are, Harold eats them and shares them with his father [Salem Ludwig], his mother [Jo Van Fleet], and his fiancée, who all dissolve into laughter and a dizzying, joyous silliness. What begins as a strange, comic detour quickly becomes a turning point, a moment that makes Harold question the rigid boundaries of his straight, orderly existence. The experience is interpreted by him as a revelation, a shove toward renouncing aspects of his conventional life.

As the reverberations of the trip settle, Harold makes bold moves: he leaves Joyce at the chuppah moments before they are to be married, then moves in with Nancy and begins a quest to find himself with the aid of a guru [Louis Gottlieb]. The pursuit is not a simple escape; it’s a search for meaning, freedom, and authenticity, guided by the countercultural energy surrounding him.

Yet the more Harold dives into this new lifestyle, the more it reveals itself to be as shallow and unsatisfying as the one he came from. Nancy warns him that norms can be as elusive as they are comforting, telling him that monogamy isn’t hip. The realization that neither path fully satisfies him leads to a dramatic pivot: he decides to try to rebuild his life with Joyce, hoping to salvage something that feels true.

In a final, impulsive moment, Harold rushes out of the wedding and into the street, admitting that he doesn’t yet know exactly what he’s searching for, but that there must be something beautiful out there.
