The story follows Li Xuelian, a woman who enters into a strategic divorce with her husband to bypass Chinese property laws, which restrict married couples to owning only one home. However, the plan backfires when her ex-husband marries another woman and denies the existence of their agreement. To further damage her reputation, he falsely accuses her of infidelity, labeling her a “Madame Bovary.”
Outraged by this betrayal and the slander, Li Xuelian embarks on a persistent and principled crusade to nullify the initial divorce so that she can legally divorce him properly. Her journey takes her through an exhausting bureaucratic labyrinth, escalating from local police and the judiciary to provincial authorities and eventually all the way to Beijing.
