Liz Murray is one of two daughters in an extremely dysfunctional Bronx family. Her father watches Jeopardy! and seems to know all the questions, and their bathtub never drains, forcing her to shower while standing on an overturned bucket to avoid the fetid water.
In her early years, Lisa is her sister, and their drug-addicted, schizophrenic mother Jean Murray has AIDS and is nearly blind, while their father Peter Finnerty is also a drug addict who is intelligent but socially awkward and living with AIDS. Liz is removed from the home and placed into the care system because her father cannot take care of her.
At 15, Liz moves in with Jean, Lisa, and her grandfather Pops, who sexually abused Jean and Liz’s aunt. After Pops hits her during a fight, Liz runs away with a girl from school named Chris who is being abused at home.
Jean dies of AIDS, which she contracted from sharing needles during her drug years, and Liz experiences a moment described as a > “slap in the face” by her mother’s death. This painful realization becomes the turning point that fuels her determination to finish high school, a goal she achieves in just two years rather than the usual four.
With remarkable persistence, Liz becomes a standout student and earns a scholarship to Harvard University through an essay contest sponsored by The New York Times, a testament to her resilience and strategic hard work. Her story offers a clear view of the challenges she faced, from poverty and neglect to health crises and systemic obstacles, and it underscores how education can become a powerful pathway out of hardship.
