In a celestial realm, Shemp Shemp Howard speaks with his Uncle Mortimer, who is on a lengthy telephone debate about whether Shemp belongs in Heaven or Hell. Mortimer frets about his nephews Moe and Larry, and he assigns Shemp a mission: reform the two wayward cousins so that Shemp can earn his own passage to Heaven. Shemp agrees, but only if he can remain imperceptible to Earth’s inhabitants.

On Earth, Moe Moe Howard and Larry Larry Fine attend the reading of Shemp’s will with their legal guardian, I. Fleecem I. Fleecem. They grumble when Shemp’s modest bequest falls short of covering Fleecem’s fee. Yet Shemp secretly slips out the funds, briefly letting Moe and Larry wonder if his ghostly presence has a stake in the living world.

With a grin and a glimmer of opportunity, Moe and Larry hatch an elaborate, fraudulent plan to curry favor and cash from the wealthy DePuysters by offering them a line of novelty fountain pens. Shemp steps in to thwart the scheme, but his meddling unintentionally sparks a catastrophic fire that spirals out of control. The blaze spreads with chaotic comedy, towering over their schemes and testing their resolve.

Back in Shemp’s bedroom, the film reveals that the earlier events were a dreamlike fable. The narrative makes it clear that the dream’s symbols have real consequences as Shemp faces danger from his own careless habit of smoking while dozing off. The tension between fate and folly stands at the center of the sequence, blurring the line between illusion and consequence.

After the flames are extinguished, Shemp recounts the surreal experience to Moe and Larry. Their response is a punchy, tongue-in-cheek anticlimax: a cream pie slaps across the dreamer’s face, followed by a dry quip and a mock gesture of offering more writing implements. In the end, the trio’s old dynamic returns, mixing mischief with a tiny, stubborn slice of moral trouble, leaving the audience with a lighthearted, bittersweet chuckle.
