Villagers ask the mighty Beowulf to slay a nearby monster that has terrorized their land. Together with his protégé Finn, he ventures into a dark cave, only to find that the threat is a gigantic serpent. In a tense confrontation, Beowulf defeats the creature, ending an immediate danger and earning cautious cheers from the locals.

Later, [Beowulf], armed with a crossbow that shoots missiles, joins [Finn], his uncle King Higlack, and a small band of men as they set sail for Denmark to aid the Danes against the threat of Grendel. On board, Beowulf recounts the legendary rise of King Hrothgar, who became king of the Danes and built a city said to rival Rome in grandeur. A wyvern-like Hag appears in the tale and tears into the kingdom; the assault leaves the royal family scarred—Queen Queen Wealhtheow loses her grip on sanity, and one of their two sons dies fighting the Hag. The royal family is forced to abandon the city and seek refuge in a nearby village, and, as the story unfolds, the Hag’s birth-like doubt becomes a grim omen that Grendel will soon be born of fear and vengeance.

When they reach the coast, Beowulf and his warriors land, and Unferth greets them in the forest with the assistance of Captain Wulfgar. The meeting is cordial but tense, and the king’s men are kept unarmed for safety, as Beowulf is welcomed back with ritual warmth. A feast follows in the abandoned city, a setting chosen to keep Grendel away from the people by creating a lull in the monster’s attention. During the celebration, Ingrid—a member of the royal family—begins flirting with Finn, sparking jealousy in Unferth, who harbors his own feelings for Ingrid. The atmosphere grows heated and intoxicated, and Unferth challenges Finn and Beowulf, sparking a sharp confrontation. Hrothgar, disappointed by his son’s boorish behavior, intervenes, and the tension culminates when Beowulf defeats Unferth in a single, decisive blow. The moment is interrupted, however, by Grendel’s sudden appearance in the courtyard, where the guards are overwhelmed by the monster’s ruthless aggression. Beowulf and his men attack, but Beowulf’s crossbow bolts repeatedly miss their mark, allowing Grendel to wreak further havoc before escaping.

The next day, Beowulf presses a startling truth from Hrothgar: Grendel has been calmed for years by child sacrifices, a grim secret of the former rulers who came before him. With this revelation, Beowulf resolves to hunt Grendel himself. He orders Wulfgar to bombard the forest with burning barrels, hoping to draw the creature out. While his companions stay behind, they are ambushed by Grendel, and Beowulf individually tracks the beast. In a dramatic head-to-head, he finally strikes Grendel in the head and then pierces the monster’s heart, retrieving Grendel’s severed arm as proof of victory. Hrothgar receives the news with relief and lavishly rewards the triumphant heroes as they begin their return toward the ship.

Yet victory is tempered by a new threat: Grendel’s mother, Hag, was never truly dead and is now intent on revenge. She abducts Ingrid, prompting the royal family to summon Beowulf back into action. Unferth and Finn pursue their own plan, and Ingrid manages to free herself, though she wanders lost through the forest. Unferth protects her, but his bravery costs him his life, and in his dying moments he confesses his love for Ingrid and asks her to tell his parents he forgives them for the loss of his brother.

When Hag returns for Ingrid again, Finn leaps between them and is wounded, while Beowulf, Wulfgar, and the royal couple approach the scene. The hero volunteers to face Hag alone, and Hrothgar advises him to seek a sword hidden at the cave’s entrance. Beowulf locates the weapon, finds Finn gravely injured, and faces Hag as she attacks with ferocity. Although Beowulf’s initial attempts miss, Finn fires a final shot from the crossbow to slow Hag, and Beowulf seizes the moment to behead her with the enchanted sword. He presents Hag’s head to Hrothgar and carries Finn back to the village, where their band continues toward safer shores.

With the immediate turmoil resolved, Beowulf sails again toward new adventures, while Finn and Ingrid stay together and start a family. In the aftermath of the battles with Grendel and Hag, peace begins to return to the land, leaving a quiet sense of restoration after a long era of danger.
