Aging, respected Captain Paul Blanchard, Charlton Heston, is on his final submarine tour before promotion to command of a submarine squadron. Surfaced and returning to port, the USS Neptune is struck by a Norwegian freighter in heavy fog. With the engine room flooded and its main propulsion disabled, Neptune sinks to a depth of 1,450 feet (440 meters) or approx. 241.6 fathoms on a canyon ledge above the ocean floor. A United States Navy rescue force, commanded by Captain Hal Bennett, Stacy Keach, arrives on the scene, but Neptune is subsequently rolled by a gravity slide to a greater angle that does not allow the Navy’s Deep-submergence rescue vehicle (DSRV) to complete its work. As technical malfunctions increase, the submarine’s sections flood and men die, crewmen have nervous breakdowns and tensions grow between the commanding officers.

The crew’s strain is felt in the cramped, heat-padded corridors as alarms blare and compartments flood. Mickey, Ned Beatty, an older and steadying presence, helps keep morale up even as the ship buckles under pressure. Phillips, Christopher Reeve, struggles to keep communications and life-support functioning, while Harris, Michael O’Keefe, and Murphy, Stephen McHattie, race to patch failing systems and stabilize the submarine’s fragile interior. The atmosphere grows tenser as blame and worry ripple through the ranks, and the gulf between the Neptune’s senior officers and the rescue team widens under the weight of dwindling time and dwindling air.

In a bid to salvage the situation, a small experimental submersible named Snark is brought in. Snark is capable, but it is commanded by Captain Don Gates, David Carradine — an offbeat, audacious naval officer whose unorthodox methods clash with the Neptune’s conventional leadership. Snark becomes the crew’s last, best hope; if it can reach the Neptune and guide it to safety, perhaps the trapped sailors can be saved. The rescue operation is perilous, and every moment inside the pressurized hull feels like a ticking clock, each beep of the gauge a small reminder of how close disaster looms.

As the drama unfolds, Gates demonstrates a rare blend of daring and resourcefulness. He uses the Snark to jam Neptune in place, buying precious seconds for the DSRV to reach the crippled vessel. Yet the rescue is not straightforward: another gravity slide threatens to sweep both the Neptune and the Snark into the abyss, even as Bennett’s team closes in. The tension peaks as the submersibles inch toward safety, the ocean’s blackness swallowing sound and light in a suffocating hush.

In the climactic moment, the rescue succeeds in part but at a heavy cost. The Neptune and the Snark are carried off the canyon ledge, slipping into the vast, cold depths below. The operation leaves a wake of solemn resolve among the survivors, tempered by the knowledge that some lives could not be saved. Moments later, the surviving crew members are rescued by the DSRV. Captain Blanchard, having been saved, emerges from the DSRV and is welcomed aboard the rescue ship USS Pigeon by Bennett and his officers, a somber note of gratitude and endurance ringing through the reunion as the sea returns to its indifferent vastness.
