After being snubbed for a weekend getaway by his teaching assistant, the socially awkward physics professor Tarl Cabot stumbles upon a ring with mysterious, magical properties that acts as a gateway to the distant world of Gor. Once transported, he finds himself in a land where science and sorcery mingle, and where the fate of a whole people hangs in the balance. The discovery soon pulls him into a crisis that is not of his making but demands his involvement.

On Gor, a village is under siege by the army of the tyrannical self-appointed priest-king Sarm. As Cabot watches, the invaders press their advance with ruthless efficiency, aiming to seize the Home Stone, a mystical artifact that forges a link between Gor and Earth. In the heat and dust of combat, Cabot is drawn into the conflict and, in a brutal moment of misfortune, kills Sarm’s own son. Weary, wounded, and left for dead in the desert, he faces a harsh test of endurance before any chance of escape or redemption.

Rescued by the bold and enigmatic Talena, a barbarian princess of Ko-ro-ba, Cabot learns that her father—the Ko-ro-ba king—has been captured along with the Home Stone. The pair form a tense alliance as they navigate a landscape of shifting loyalties and treacherous politics. Talena explains that the Home Stone is the key to the interworld pathways that keep Gor connected to Earth, and that Sarm’s grasp on it is a threat to both worlds. With this knowledge, Cabot joins Talena on a perilous rescue mission into Sarm’s domain, drawn by a mixture of duty and a growing, complicated bond between them.

Their escape attempt triggers a wider rebellion as Cabot leads a group of Gor’s inhabitants in a bold bid to cast off Sarm’s control. The operation culminates in a direct confrontation with the tyrant, and Cabot’s resolve helps him end Sarm’s tyranny, freeing Talena and her captured father and reclaiming the Home Stone. The rebellion gains momentum, and the wheels of fate turn toward a resolution that could tilt the balance of power back toward Ko-ro-ba and the world beyond Gor.
